Siglar Carbon index

What is good emissions performance?

Do you know what represents a good emissions performance on your next voyage? Our daily data-driven indexes estimate carbon emissions on main shipping routes, along with the carbon cost on routes impacted by EU ETS. That way you know the level of emissions of your current shipping program, future voyages or FFAs.

CARBON COST EXPOSURE

Our freely available indexes indicate the carbon exposure of the most commonly traded routes and also the carbon cost exposure related to the routes that are eligible under the European Emissions Trading System.

How we calculate emissions

We model emissions on an individual ship and voyage basis using a data first approach. Actual reported consumption data from ship voyages is collected at a granular level and used to train and optimize our emissions estimation model. The indexes are calculated combining Siglar Carbon’s ship availability algorithms with Siglar Carbon emissions estimation models.

The emissions range timeline is based on a daily updated list of available ships, where the upper range line is represented by one of the ships with the highest total emissions number (95th percentile of the result distribution), the middle line represents a ship with average emissions (50th percentile) and the bottom line represents a ship with low emissions (5th percentile).

The index change numbers indicate daily changes in emissions.

How we calculate costs

The carbon price is based on yesterday’s settlement price of the European Emission Allowances in the EEX spot market, and the EUR/USD exchange rate from the European Central Bank.

All emissions from intra-EU voyages, half of the emissions from global EU voyages and all emissions occurring at berth in an EU port will be eligible under the ETS.

Shipping companies have to surrender allowances for 40 % of eligible emissions for 2024, 70 % for 2025 and 100 % for 2026.
